I came across this article in the Leader Post this morning, and I was very excited when I read the headline: City of Regina staff recommends curbside recycling program. I had never really thought about the recycling system in Regina until I took a Geography class last semester than dealt with environmental issues. My professor mentioned many other cities that have curbside recycling and she couldn’t understand why Regina wouldn’t incorporate something like that into their disposal system. She said each person could receive a bin similar to the garbage bins everyone in the city has now. Once as week, just like the garbage, a truck would come and pick up their bin of recycling. This is more convenient for people than piling it up in their garage or basement and taking it down to Sarcan or to recycling bins somewhere in the city. Convenience is the key thing the City of Regina must keep in mind. For the majority of the population, including myself, if something is inconvenient I simply won’t do it. Too many people are throwing away materials that could easily be recycled and reused. This is having a tremendous affect on our environment which contributes to the vicious cycle of global warming. I am very interested to see what happens with this recommendation by the City of Regina staff, and I really hope they come up with something that will work!
I thought that Regina did have a curbside recycling system because i often see my neighbors putting their blue recycling boxes at their curbs. Maybe only certain neighborhoods within the city have a curbside recycling program? I’m not too sure.
In Lloydminster, where i am from, there is a wonderful curbside recycling program. My parents are very good about putting everything that they can into the blue box, and it makes their weekly accumulation of garbage much smaller. At first, it seemed slightly inconvenient to stop ourselves from simply throwing everything away, but it is actually such a simple way to keep our planet green!
I would love to have my recycling picked up. It takes up a lot of room in my house and having picked up once a week would be great. Hope this goes through.
My parents just became a part of the recycling pick up plan. Now we recycle so much stuff. Its great and its shocking how many things can be recycled with this program.
